Looking for Personal Trainers

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. 1 Comment

Personal Trainers Directory

I’ve been looking for any personal trainers in the US who are looking to make more money.  Who isn’t right?  I’m not going to be stuffing cash in their pockets but exposure is what improves the chance of landing the big client and getting more local clients and my directory will help both.

One example is personal trainer Okinyi Oyungo who is a CSCS and neuroscience graduate from the University of Pennsylvania who wrote this week’s entry in my Fitness Top 5 List about the Worst Cardio Mistakes.

You can view his trainer directory entry here:  Maryland Personal Trainers
If you would like to be included in the directory please email:  mike@askthetrainer.com

Marshmallow Candied Yams the Ultimate Dietary Suicide

Happy Thanksgiving

I had my Thanksgiving dinner yesterday because my sister & husband are going to Oregon on Thursday.

It gave me motivation to write this weeks Fitness List which happens to be seasonal.

I love stuffing but it had me thinking, which foods are the most fattening on Thanksgiving?

I created the top 5 worst Thanksgiving foods list which had foods such as marshmallowed candied yams (picture) which I was astonished to find had literally billions of calories.

Personal Trainers Directory

New Feature on AskTheTrainer.com

There are so many great personal trainers in the United States.

Exposure is important for many careers in personal training so I have created a

Personal Trainers Directory

In the directory you can click on a map of the United States and find personal trainers in each state and eventually each city.

I plan to use the directory to help personal trainers in each state and city to not only advertise their websites, but also to achieve higher search engine rankings for their local listings so they can get more local personal training clients and more exposure.

I will allow freedom for personal trainers to have any information they like posted.

If they do not already know, having their address posted to as many places as possible is one of the most important things for getting high ranks on the Google local listings which is google maps (below).

These local listings are absolutely FREE as opposed to the yellow which is paid adverting through google adwords which may cost as much as $5 per click!

You can see the below search for San Francisco Personal Trainer bringing up my website FitSF.com

Paid Advertising through Google in Yellow

Paid Advertising through Google in Yellow / Free Local Maps listing in Red

I will require a small one time donation for anyone wishing to be listed in my directory which is for the time I will put into making their entry look nice and how the personal trainer wants it to represent them.

Now the average personal trainer directory is automated and boring and gives really nothing to the browsers of the internet or the trainer or their clients.  In my Personal Trainers directory there will be a nice looking listing for each personal trainer.

Best Dietary Supplements

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. 1 Comment

supplementsAre Dietary Supplements Necessary?

While many people over the years have lived long, healthy lives without using dietary supplements, the current nutrition status for most people may warrant the use of dietary supplements.

Many people use dietary supplements for the wrong reasons hoping that they have found the magic pill.

Supplements are a great way to ensure you get the optimal amount of the important macronutrients lacking in your diet as well as micronutrients which may enhance performance or have other properties.

I have been concentrating mostly on exercise so far on AskTheTrainer but I soon will be focusing on Dietary Supplement.

So far here are some Supplements I have Researched and briefly Covered on AskTheTrainer.com

Best Personal Training Certifications for Personal Trainers

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. 2 Comments

NASM CPT

Personal Training Certifications are a Topic of Much Debate in the Personal Training Community

The topic has crossed this blog numerous times before and it has again.

The Best Personal Trainer Certifications is this weeks weekly fitness top 5 list on my website askthetrainer.com

To tell the truth, I was feeling lazy and have other projects going on so I decided to do an easy list.  I also planned a special Thanksgiving list for a couple weeks from now.

Which personal training certification which is right for you depends totally on which clients you plan to train.  My list consists of the top 5 personal trainer certifications for general personal fitness training such as Gold’s gym, 24 hour fitness, any private personal training studio etc.

If a personal trainer was looking to obtain a certification for clinical settings, ACSM is the best.  In any strength & conditioning setting, NSCA-CSCS is definitely the best.

I have mentioned many times that the certification does not make the trainer but some personal training certifications are simply more applicable than others.  This is why I chose the NASM as the best certification.

I have neither the time nor the money to check out every personal training certification but I have seen some practice tests for different personal training certifications and they were pretty simple.

Exercise Information – Personal Trainer Client Mistakes

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. No Comments

First off I just noticed that when anyone in the United States searches for “Exercise Information” my website is 3 of over 20,000,000 results.  PRETTY COOL

Since most of my Top 5 Lists have been related to exercise and nutrition I decided to do one about the personal training profession.

I did this weeks list about the top 5 client mistakes when working with personal trainers.

I wrote this list for personal trainers as well as personal training clients.

I have blogged before about the client-trainer relationship and I think it is important for both trainers and clients to understand that the success of each party is dependent upon the other.

I cannot speak for other trainers but the thing I want the most out of my personal training business is for my clients to get the results which they want.  This not only helps them achieve their desired goals but also adds a “notch to my belt” with another example of applied exercise science.

Client mistakes can actually make trainers more money but money has never been the primary motivation for being a personal trainer.  It really burns me deep inside when a client is not doing his or her part.

As a fitness fanatic it is often difficult for me to understand why sometimes people have negative attitudes towards exercise even while paying for personal training sessions but I believe this list is just the tip of the iceberg of client mistakes when working with personal trainers.

Bicicyle Ride and Cleaning up Diet

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. No Comments

Today's Bicycle Ride

Today's Bicycle Ride in Marin Headlands

I have been working online as I promised myself for the entire year so far and it is over 10 months down.  There were times where I was very unhealthy (compared to my usual self).  I had periods where I only exercised 3 or less times per week.

I was addicted to caffeine and stayed up all night working on my multiple websites, videos and blogs.  I have over 700 webpages online now and I’m still working hard, but I started toning the volume of online work I’ve been doing over the last 3 weeks.

I have completely cut out highly caffeinated beverages (coffee, energy drinks) and do not rely on caffeine for energy anymore.  I have been running thanks to my new running up all the hills I can find in San Francisco thanks to my new Brooks motion control running shoes.

My Weekly Fitness List this week was an idea i got from my current diet which is pretty clean with minimal eating out.  I wrote about the Top 5 Easy Ways to Clean up Your Diet

I had a no-show client this morning and now I have about 8 hours to make use of.  I plan on going for a bicycle ride across the golden gate bridge and over to the Marin Headlands.

I usually go to the right of the bridge over to Sausalito and Tibauron but that route is pretty flat and boring.  I have never went up and down the hill to the left of the bridge into the headlands where there is nothing but empty hills and a nice ocean breeze.  The weather is foggy but I need to prepare for hot weather so I have to pack a bunch of stuff.

When I get back I need to work on my newest section of AskTheTrainer.com which I will create an Ebook called the very catchy…

Fat Loss Matrix Which will fit along with the current (under construction) Fat Loss section on AskTheTrainer.

Best Cardio Workouts and Avoiding Injury

Posted by michael Behnken MS CSCS. 1 Comment

San Francisco from top of Twin Peaks

San Francisco from top of Twin Peaks

It was a beautiful day in San Francisco today as our usual Indian summer is progressing nicely.

I have not did cardio in the gym in a couple months and have been running all over San Francisco.  Running to the highest point in San Francisco had me thinking about my top 5 lists for the past couple weeks.

On the way up to the top of Twin Peaks I was enjoying my jog and I thought about the Top 5 Cardio Workouts list which I put hiking as the #1 cardio workout.

Running uphill is great because it requires you to move your body weight against gravity more.  It is also very good for helping build the calves and thighs and keep them toned.

I was surprised how easy it was to run up the hill considering I feel horrendously out of shape and weight in at 200 pounds regularly for the first time in my life.  The view was perfect and I bought a grape juice from the vendor on the top and I was ready to make the easy coasting jog down the hill back home.

As my knees were bugging me on the way down I was thinking about the Top 5 Ways to Prevent Injury which was my latest web page on AskTheTrainer.com

Something which has helped me get back into running which I neglected to mention about injury prevention

is proper equipment.  In my case the proper equipment was footwear.  I bought a pair of Brooks running shoes which were designed for motion control and it has all but eliminated my heel spurs.

Injury prevention is very important as injuries can really stop fitness program progress dead in its tracks.  Since my masters degree emphasized injury prevention I really put together a page on it for my website.

I took the angle of explaining the most common mechanism of injury for the normal person as I think knowledge is power when it comes to preventing injury.

CPR CardioPulmonary Resuscitation

Hopefully Personal Trainers Never Have to Perform CPR

Hopefully Personal Trainers Never Have to Perform CPR

CPR is a Certification which every Personal Trainer must Obtain and Retain

Since I just re-certified my CPR for another 2 years yesterday I started thinking about CPR. All personal trainers have to stay up to date on their CPR skills for obvious reasons.

CPR is something which all people, especially personal trainers never want to do. It seems that every CPR class instructor always has tales about performing CPR on multiple people but they are often EMTs who deal with it on the job.

A personal trainer who has used CPR multiple times is either extremely unlucky, works with very old clients, or is just a horrible trainer.

The thought of needing to perform CPR may seem far off but realistically, it could be necessary at any given moment. It is important to know what to do in the case of an unfortunate incident and I believe that the recertification course every 2 years serves its purpose well to refresh the personal trainer in basic live prolonging techniques.

Someone reading this who is not familiar with CPR may have the misconception that CPR brings dead people back to life. Often in movies a victim recovers drastically and miraculously comes back to life while someone is performing CPR on them.

The fact is, CPR is only performed when the victim has no pulse or breathing. Every CPR class teaches you this immediately that CPR is only used for keeping the blood flowing through the body and brain until the ALS or Advanced life support can arrive with advanced equipment and drugs.

AED - Must PUrchase for any Home or Gym

AED - Must PUrchase for any Home or Gym

A piece of equipment which can save lives is the AED. The Automated External Defibrillator is a valuable and soon to be required piece of equipment for all places where people are.

The CPR will keep the blood flowing while the AED (if necessary) shocks the heart to try to start the coordinated beating.

CPR re-certification is required for all personal trainer certifications and is a valuable class to take for anyone who is around high risk people such as elders.

I have never had to perform CPR but have come close. I had a client who called me to cancel a training session for an hour later on the way to the hospital with very bad leg pain.

It turned out he had a pulmonary thrombosis which is a blood clot in the lung and happens to be deadly over 50% of the time. That was the only close call I have had but it made me really pay more close attention to my CPR class and make sure there is an AED in the fitness studio.
