Healthy Chinese Food ?

Healthy Chinese Food ?

I recently received this wonderful response to my Top 5 Worst Foods list from one of my loyal fans…

To the Ignorant hillbilly:

I have some comments on your article on the 5 worst foods.

You mentioned that “Chinese vegetarian dishes are usually loaded with fat calories and lacking most of the nutrients the vegetables once had before they were cooked in the wok which has been building up wonderful trans fatty acids over the days and possibly weeks in between cleanings.”

Most Chinese restaurants serve steam vegetable dishes nowadays. Where have you been? As for the trans fatty acids build up on the wok, you obviously have never been to a Chinese restaurant’s kitchen.

Since most Americanized Chinese dishes usually have some kind of sauce, the chef must wash the wok after each cooked dish, sometimes even twice for one dish so the wok won’t stick.

They use a metal scouring pad & there’s a faucet right above the wok that they can simply fill the wok with water by turning the faucet direction. Also there’s a trench right in front of the stove that they can discard the dirty water. I bet you didn’t know about that.

About the meat, Chinese do serve pigeon but they are not the dirty street pigeon, some high class restaurants serves young pigeon that are called squabs which have high medicinal value. They can cost up to $75 each. I bet you never had them considering what seedy neighborhood you got your Chinese food.

As for serving rat & scraps, there’s no guarantee that you can’t find it in any other cuisines. To single out Chinese food is so very juvenile & malicious.

Stop being so ignorant & act like you know everything. You really should do some research before you post something so irresponsible!

Okay okay, I got a kick out of this one.

First of all, ignorant hillbilly, I have no idea where this woman is, but hillbillies do not live in San Francisco. That is just a downright pathetically funny statement. I have been to Hong Kong where I enjoyed Chinese food every day but never encountered anything resembling healthy food.

Secondly, “…you obviously have never been to a Chinese restaurant’s kitchen.”

Actually, I spend the majority of my days venturing from kitchen to kitchen in Chinese restaurants throughout the city. A city in fact where there are the most Chinese restaurants per capita outside of China.  And evidentially more hillbillies per capita than most of Appalachia.

Thirdly, it is my website and it’s my opinion and I personally, along with many others including The Associated Press and everybody I know rank Americanized Chinese food on the bottom of the barrel on the healthy food scale.

As far as rat and pigeon meat, nobody can argue that the meat in 90% of Chinese food restaurants is some kind of mystery meat. There are no other types restaurants which rival Chinese Food Restaurants in terms of mystery meat.

I once went to a Chinese food buffet with 3 or more duck options. It was awkward until low and behold behind the Chinese food restaurant was a duck pond. It just had me thinking…

Finally, saying, “To single out Chinese food is so very juvenile & malicious.” couldn’t be any further from the truth.

It is called observation. There would be no reason to say Chinese food is horrible for your health and body if myself and countless others had not experienced it many times before.

I’m just a personal trainer and I would NEVER recommend any clients ever eat Americanized Chinese food as part of their weight loss fitness program.

  1. I agree that Americanized Chinese food is one of the worst things on the planet, both nutritionally and in terms of the taste. There are some people, however, who have discovered that cooking home-style Chinese food at home can be both healthful and nutritious! Check out my blog at http://tangstein.wordpress.com for recipes, menus, and info on ingredients, techniques, etc.

BTW, I have to respectfully disagree with your ranking of B&J’s ice cream on your bottom 5 – but that’s just because I grew up in VT and I can also have a single portion without eating the whole tub (although it is a struggle…)
