Eating Healthy Sounds and Looks So Good!

This is a total 180 from last weeks list about the top 5 worst foods to eat which made it very fun to write. This weeks fitness top 5 list is about the…

Top 5 Every Day Foods

I had a fun, educational and motivational time writing this list. Popeye was back again with spinach. Spinach is a good way to add greens to the diet easily and it has less unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects than broccoli and beans which didn’t make the list.

I learned that black beans have a great amount of antioxidants and some special chemicals which are supposed to increase brain function. After I read that, I reached for some black bean & lime soup which I have been reluctant to eat due to its sodium content.

Four out of the five foods on the list were plant sources. The sole non-plant food was cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is a great food for many reasons. As an overeater I really value foods that are nearly impossible to overeat on. Cottage cheese is one of those.

As a matter of a fact, for everyone looking to lose weight, tone up or eat less, all 5 foods on this list are almost impossible to overeat in their natural form.

I have never heard of anyone getting fat, or overeating apples, spinach, cottage cheese, oats or sweet potatoes. Personally, I don’t think I would reach for a 2nd serving of any of the top 5 every day foods at one time.

Compare a baked sweet potato with a bag of potato chips, potato salad or piece of whole wheat toast and it is by far the food you are least likely to overeat on. The other 4 foods are the same. They are loaded with different and exclusive nutrients and fiber with the exception of cottage cheese.

Bodybuilders rely on sweet potatoes and oatmeal almost exclusively as their sources of carbohydrate when they eat clean. Cottage cheese is also great for bodybuilding because of its slow digestion rate.

These foods are not just for bodybuilders or even people into bodybuilding. The list is for everyone.

As far as nutrition programs go, weight watchers has the best idea. Portion control of the foods you eat on a regular basis works.

I had an idea in the past to create a daily checklist of certain foods. Kind of like the opposite of weight watchers. Each day you should eat as many foods on the checklist as possible. The foods on the list would be similar to the foods on this weekly top 5.

Foods which are nutrient dense and calorically low tend to be the most filling foods to suppress the appetite and lower the risk of overeating. All foods on the list are very low on the glycemic index as well which is probably the reason why they cause a person to not overeat.

It was very hard to leave out some “superfoods” off the list, but I think it is feasible to eat these foods every single day and receive the most benefit from eating these 5 every day.

Berries for example are expensive, offer less calories and less nutrients compared to the rest of the list. Nuts are good to eat, but every day may lead to excess calorie consumption. The only disadvantage of the list is the lack of healthy essential fats.

I kind of hinted at adding healthy fats to the foods when I mentioned muesli which usually has some nut slivers in it. I almost put flaxmeal on the list, but when you consider that most people’s diet is very high in fat they are most likely going to be getting enough healthy fats.

Flaxmeal would be a great food to add in every day in your diet. An easy way to use flaxmeal is to add it into the oatmeal which gives oatmeal a delicious nutty flavor while adding extra fiber, fat, and protein and also lignans, which are antioxidants.

Overall this list motivated me to develop a daily nutrition plan which can benefit myself as well as my San Francisco Personal Training clients.  If anybody would like to see all the sites I bookmarked here is some bookmarks about Fitness Information
