Installing Camcorder Software to my computer for the first time

Posted by Mike Behnken, MS, CSCS

I did another training session and recorded some exercises today. This time I was less inclined to blurt out obscenities. It was easy because unlike taking still photographs with even a nice Canon SLR the lighting in the room doesn’t seem to effect the picture while shooting with the Canon HG10. Today I didn’t play around with the remote control as much either. Having a hard drive makes it much easier because I don’t have to worry about the media running out.

I was recording at the highest quality and it seems like the cameras recording time will last forever. I just installed the gang of software which came with the camcorder. I am currently using the backup utility to transfer all the files on to my computer. What to do from there, I have no idea. I would like to get the videos off of the camcorder so.

What I need to do is list the exercises I already have a good video for and list the exercises I would like to catch on video. Usually I just wing it and seem to succeed, but I think this time I would like to be more organized. The first 2 training sessions I recorded only took up 3.28 gigabytes of memory. This may be a lot for a mini dvd or mini dv tape, but for my 40 GB hard drive, it is nothing.

Now that all the files are on my computer hard drive, I can now begin the tough process of learning the editing software. Hopefully scaling down the high quality video to low bandwidth youtube type video will not be a problem. I also hope to take frames of the movies and use them as still photos. I figure if a video is 30 frames per second and there is 5 minutes of video, that would be 9000 frames or 9000 possible pictures. If it works out I will be thoroughly happy because taking pictures was a pain in my butt last time.  Social Network
